Germany's chemical industry business climate index fell to -5.9 points in October 2026 from +3.0 points in September, according to survey results released by the ifo Institute on November 3. The decline came amid a strained macroeconomic environment, with companies taking a more pessimistic view of their current business conditions.

The 8.9-point drop and shift into negative territory signal weaker business confidence in the sector. For chemical and resin market participants, weaker confidence could translate into more cautious purchasing and production planning if concerns about demand persist.
The survey indicates a deterioration in sentiment, but it does not establish how much demand, prices or output have changed. The implications for the wider European chemical and resin materials market will depend on whether the weaker outlook is sustained and reflected in subsequent business activity.
